Llamas (as well as alpacas, guanacos, and vicunas) are members of the camel family. It is believed that they originated from the Central Plains of North America a few millions years ago and then appeared in South America. During the Ice Age, camelids became scarce on the North America continent and went extinct with time. But, they became abundant in South America where they underwent domestication.

Incas are believed to have worshipped these animals greatly. Male Llamas and females that could not be bred were frequently given to Gods as offerings. Their wool was also of great value and meat was occasionally used as a food source. As civilizations developed, Llamas started to be used for transporting goods.

With the development of transportation, the Llama population decreased greatly and it caused a shift in the Llamas' functions. Previously a "beast of burden," the Llama started to be used as a companion, show and therapy animal. It also became the focus of wool production industry. Nowadays, Llamas are extensively bred resulting in an increase of Llama breeding in places such as Australia and New Zealand.

This species is very intelligent and can be easily tamed. They can quickly learn to accept a halter, carry a pack, compete in shows, etc. Their maintenance does not require many expenses in comparison with other livestock. Foods needed for Llamas are said to be less costly than for similar-sized animals.
