Llamas have always been prized domesticated animals that have provided meat, wool, and other items. Nowadays, the industry of Llama breeding is great and has to be managed by many organizations, which keep the records of Llamas and hold special events for breeder and owner benefit.
The International Llama Registry (ILR) is one of the most acknowledged organizations that insures the quality of the breeding stock and maintains a huge database of livestock. It also helps owners of various subspecies to learn more about these animals. The ILR does not register Alpacas.
The importance of Llama registering cannot be overestimated. It is recommended to register the breeding stock since it will be easier to trace the linage of the animal and provide a better choice of the breeding stock.
The price of a Llama depends on the quality, wool, conformation, bloodlines, and other factors. A pet quality Llama may cost
as low as $400 dollars, whereas trained packers and stud males average $2,000
dollars. Reproductive females may cost from $1,500 to $5,000 dollars and more. Buying a Llama from registered breeding stock is good proof of its quality.
The ILR is a non-for-profit organization that was formed in 1985 and is independent from all known Llama registries. ILR members have to pay a small fee each year and are usually provided with additional services such as ballots, surveys, and news on the Llama industry. Currently, the number of Llamas registered with the ILR is over 140,000 animals with owners residing all over the world.
